Synopsis:

The rarely known story of two youngsters who, armed only with courage and imagination, started digging a tunnel under the Berlin Wall in the winter of 1961.
Gigi and Mimmo, two friends studying in Germany, witness the sudden isolation of east Berlin as decided by the DDR government in 1961. The German city plunges into social and economic chaos and continuous attempts to flee to the western side. Most of these attempts end in tragedy, and finally a wall is built to permanently divide both sides of the city.
Our protagonists feel the urge to help their friend Peter, hostage to the eastern part of the city where he was temporarily travelling with his family. A tunnel seems like a crazy idea, but soon a group of young people unite to carry out this task. Exhausting phisical work, spies from the secret services, adversity of all sorts must be endured in order to reach the goal. For seven months the digging goes on, until finally the 123-metre long tunnel is completed. Mimmo and Gigi’s tunnel took 29 people to an alternative future.
An inspiring true story, of ordinary yet extraordinary young people, powered by the force of freedom.
